Tillandsia ‘Califano’ (Ionantha × Baileyi)
The Tillandsia ‘Califano’ (Ionantha × Baileyi) is an attractive ornamental hybrid belonging to the Bromeliaceae family, highly valued for its compact size, bulbous shape, and ease of cultivation. It is an air plant ideal for beginners and collectors alike.
This hybrid comes from a cross between Tillandsia Ionantha and Tillandsia Baileyi, combining compact size and coloration with a more exotic structure.
The Tillandsia Ionantha, native to Mexico and Central America, contributes its compact growth, ability to produce offsets, and characteristic reddish coloration during flowering, as well as its great adaptability.
Meanwhile, the Tillandsia Baileyi, native to Texas (USA) and Mexico, contributes its bulbous base, more elongated leaves, and dynamic form, giving the hybrid a more sculptural appearance.
Thanks to this genetic combination, the Tillandsia ‘Califano’ develops a compact semi-bulbous structure, with narrow, slightly twisted, grayish-green leaves, which can acquire reddish tones under good lighting conditions or during flowering.
Its growth is moderate to fast and it produces offsets easily, forming dense clusters over time.
During the flowering season, it develops a long and narrow inflorescence with reddish bracts and tubular violet flowers, combining traits from both species.
Thanks to its size, resistance, and aesthetics, the Tillandsia ‘Califano’ is ideal for decorating with air plants, collections, mounting on wood, or compositions with bulbous and compact tillandsias, making it very versatile.
